Kangaroo Care in NICU

Anyone who has been though NICU, will have heard and experienced the miracle and joy of Kangaroo Care. Not only does it have health benefits to baby but it is the bond that forms between parent and child. For me, the memory of holding Sophia for the first time after a 4 week wait, still takes my breath away. Coming from a medical background, I had initially tried my best to try take my motherly emotions away from the experience, to "protect" myself from falling in love with her. It was this experience that melted my heart and tore down those barriers. I vowed from that day, that I would love her as much as I could, and from love, miracles would happen..... and Miracles did happen. 

These school holidays, my crafty 6 year old son became interested in beading. One afternoon we strung together some brightly coloured wooden beads. Halfway through, he realised we had no pendant to put on it. He ran around the house pulling out bits and bobs until he finally settled on his rubber kangaroo/ joey. He said "this will do! This is mama and this is Fi (his nickname for Sophia)". The significance of his choice was not apparent to him, but brought me to tears. As we strung together the necklace, we both recounted our many memories of our special Kangaroo Cuddles with "Fi" in NICU and marvelled at how much she has grown.

Hopefully its significance will mean as much to you, as it does to my family. 50% of the profits from these necklace will be donated to The Royal Hospital for Woman Foundation, for the work and research they provide for premature babies and woman's health.
